Sports Medicine

The primary goal of the Sports Medicine Physician is to get athletes out of the clinic or off the training table and back onto the field and into the game as soon as possible. Health maintenance and injury prevention is a task shared by the Physician as well as the Coaches, Athletic Trainers and athletes themselves.

Orthopaedic Surgeons are often the “Team Doc” for all levels of sports from high school to the professional level. We are responsible for the diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation of sports related injuries. These can involve “overuse injuries” such as strains/sprains, tendonitis and stress fractures as well as “traumatic injuries” such as fractures (broken bones), joint dislocations and tendon ruptures. The most common area of injury is usually the athlete’s shoulder or knee.

Common Shoulder Injuries include dislocations, rotator cuff tears, collarbone separations or fractures, impingement and tendonitis. Treatments can include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy exercise and rehabilitation, cortisone injections, arthroscopy and surgical reconstructions. Arthroscopy involves making 2 or 3 small incisions (called portals) in the shoulder and inserting a long thin camera into the shoulder joint. Small instruments can be used inside the joint to repair or remove damaged tissues. Recovery is usually much faster using this “minimally invasive” technique.

Common Knee Injuries include meniscus tears, Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears, cartilage injuries, fractures, kneecap tendon tears and arthritis. Treatment is similar to that of the shoulder (see above). Arthroscopy of the knee (knee scope) is one of the most common orthopaedic surgeries we perform. This can be done to repair or remove a torn meniscus, rebuild a torn ACL or to “clean out” damage from arthritis. Patients get to keep a copy of “before and after” pictures of the inside of the knee during surgery. Knee surgeries involving repair of damaged tissues often require post-op physical therapy to regain range of motion, strength and agility.
