Joint Replacement

Joint Replacement

Replacement of damaged or arthritic joints has been done by orthopaedic surgeons worldwide for over 40 years, and is considered one of the most successful operations in medicine. The goal of total joint replacement is to eliminate pain and restore function, and it has been demonstrated over the years to be excellent at doing just this. The hip and knee are the most commonly treated in this way, but the shoulder, elbow, and ankle are also done. Total joint replacement involves removal of all joint surfaces and insertion of metal and plastic spacers which then become the moving parts. Bone cement is necessary in some cases to secure the metal implant to the bone, but many times a snug fit can be achieved without cement.

These operations are considered major procedures and involve a hospital stay of several days, followed by 2-3 months of rehabilitation. Patients must make plans for the recovery period, and adjustments around the home to accommodate the use of walkers and other equipment. The removal of diseased or worn out bone requires saws and other power instruments, carefully done after surgically opening up the joint. Fixation and fit of the implants is crucial to allow for aggressive rehabilitation which begins on the day of surgery. We are fortunate to have a Post-Acute Rehabilitation Center (PARC) at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Depending on insurance approval, patients can be transferred upstairs to the PARC unit a few days after their joint replacement where they spend 2-3 weeks receiving intensive rehabilitation with the therapists from Northern Rehab. Home Care physical therapy is also used for most patients upon discharge from the hospital.
