June 2006

It’s finally spring, and will soon be summer! Unfortunately, with more outdoor activities come more accidents, and we in the orthopaedic business get busier with better weather. Summer is our “cold and flu” season. There are a few simple precautions which can prevent some injuries, and keep you “in the game” all summer.

Skateboarders and roller skaters are commonly seen for wrist fractures that can be avoided by wearing wrist guards. No, they don’t look too stylish, but it beats wearing a cast for six weeks!

Bicycle helmets are a must for all ages when riding bikes (it’s even the law for children). No matter how fast you’re going, the concrete is still just as hard when you fall.

Never, never, never should more than one person bounce on a trampoline at a time. We see kids all the time who get injured on trampolines, but I can only recall two injuries that occurred with only one bouncing. My dentist friends say they see plenty of kids with broken teeth from the same thing. Having two people bounce at once seems fun, but falls happen because timing is off and the bounce isn’t predictable.

Please wear heavy shoes or boots when mowing the yard, and never reach near the lawnmower blade when it’s running. Please respect the danger of a moving mower blade.

So, enjoy the good weather and stay safe. We’re here to help if you need us.
